Tips and Tricks to Lower Your Electricity Bills

By powerwizard

Have you ever been so stressed about your electricity bill that you don’t dare touch the thermostat? In summer we turn on a fan and in winter we put on a sweater. What if we told you there’s a way to make your house comfortable while paying less for your electricity bill?

There are hundreds of plans on the Texas market to choose from, but if you and your neighbor were placed on the same plan, you’d have different energy bills. This is because we all use energy differently, from our thermostat to hot water, to appliances we use daily.

This means the most important factor in your electricity bill is the plan you are signed up for. Every other tip we offer can definitely help your electricity bill, but none will drastically reduce it the way finding the right plan will.

The best way to save money on your energy bill is to find the right plan for your home.

There are hundreds of energy plans to choose from in the Texas market, but only one of them is the right plan for you that matches your energy usage. It’s difficult to compare all the plans available, and that’s where Power Wizard comes in. Power Wizard has tools and services to find the right plan for your family.

Being on the right plan is the best way to save money, there are steps you can take in your home to cut down your electricity usage to lower your bill.

  1. Use an Instant Pot or grill outside to help the A/C.
By limiting heat-producing appliances during the hottest parts of the day, you’re helping your A/C keep the house cool. Instead of cooking with the oven, invest in an Instant Pot, or grill in a shaded spot in the backyard.
  2. Use a fan.
A ceiling fan or a box fan is great if you’re sitting in the room. A fan cools people but doesn’t cool a room, so don’t leave it on when you aren’t around. Turn on a fan before touching the thermostat. For more info, here is an on whether to use a fan or an air conditioner.

  3. Keep bedroom doors open.
You can keep the doors within your home open to allow your air to circulate easier. This way, your A/C doesn’t have to work too hard, and your house will be comfortable faster. Be careful with portable air conditioners. They are pricey and could end up being more expensive to invest in.
  4. Put plants in front of the windows.
Plants are a great addition to the house because they will take the direct sunlight, shading your home.
  5. Invest in LED lights.
LED lights are cheaper, use less energy, and last longer. If you haven’t already, start eliminating incandescent bulbs.
  6. Unplug devices when not in use.
When anything is plugged in, it’s drawing energy from the outlet. That means, even if it isn’t turned on, it’s still adding to your electricity bill.

    1.  Don’t unplug important stuff like the refrigerator, the oven, or the dishwasher.
    2.  Unplug the coffee machine, the toaster, the entertainment system, lamps, computers, and any chargers.

  7. Turn off the lights.
During the day, try to use natural sunlight rather than using electricity. Any time you leave a room, turn off the lights. Leaving the light on costs more than just turning it off and then turning it back on when you return.
  8. Use the dishwasher.
Most dishwashers are energy-saving, and it’s better than using too much hot water, making the hot water heater work harder.
  9. Line-dry your clothing.
The dryer produces a lot of heat in your home. If you can limit using it during the day, or not at all, your A/C doesn’t have to work as hard to cool your home. The A/C is usually half of your electricity bill.
  10. Did we mention using a service like Power Wizard that finds the best plan for you.
