In the last few years, we’ve seen climate change effects: Hurricane Harvey, and the heat wave in Oregon, and it will only get worse if we don’t slow climate change. The earth is heating up, and because of that, negative weather changes are starting to appear. We’ve already seen this happen with worsening summer and winter seasons, declining animal populations, and an increased number of natural disasters each year. We need to do everything we can in order to slow climate change. One way you can help is to use carbon offsets to slow climate change.
We have started the process by using carbon offsets. And you can get involved with this too, by offsetting your own carbon that you release into the atmosphere.
What are carbon offsets, and how do they work?
A carbon offset is any program that reduces carbon emissions by either avoiding producing carbon dioxide at all or capturing carbon dioxide that’s already been released.
Some examples of carbon offsets are planting forests, renewable energy sources like wind, hydropower, or solar, or using carbon capture machinery.
- Forests – Trees are excellent carbon offsets because they pull carbon dioxide from the air and use it for photosynthesis, and then distribute the carbon dioxide back into the soil to help other plants grow and flourish. The more trees we have on the planet, the more carbon dioxide can be pulled from our air.
- Renewable energy sources – Moving away from fossil fuels is a MAJOR way to slow climate change. Fossil fuels are the number one source of carbon emission and are the top product responsible for global climate change. This means that moving to wind power, solar power, and hydro power would drastically reduce the amount of carbon in the air and help our planet heal.
- Carbon capture – There are machines that can capture carbon dioxide from the air and safely store it underground. When carbon dioxide is in the soil, it helps nourish plant life, and crops. We need carbon dioxide in the soil now more than ever, because over the years, tilling the land removes the carbon dioxide. If there’s little carbon dioxide left soil, it makes crops (the food we eat) not so healthy and full of the nutrients we need. Though this technology is expensive, it’s a major step in progress.
Why do carbon offsets matter?
Climate change is an issue for all of us because the future is grim. If it remains unchecked, then life as we know it will change forever. Species of animals will go extinct: the ocean will become too acidic for marine life, the icecaps will melt (which is the home to polar bears, seals, penguins), fresh water will become scarce, and our soil won’t produce the food we need to survive. The bottom line is that if we don’t do something, our earth will die…and without earth, there’s no us.
Luckily, we have carbon offsets to slow climate change.
This is the first major step in preventing that morbid future. Because it’s currently impossible to stop all carbon emissions, carbon offsets ensure that we’re at least cancelling out the emissions we are creating. Of course, in the future, we will need to remove the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but for now, we’re doing what we can to stop it from growing bigger.
And as individuals, we can do our part to mitigate our own emissions.
How do I offset my own carbon emissions?
Your own carbon emissions are called your “carbon footprint”. We all emit carbon dioxide by eating the foods we eat (which have to be processed and shipped, i.e. carbon dioxide), our commute to work or the store (gas is carbon dioxide), and the clothes we buy (production releases carbon dioxide). We can’t change that we emit carbon dioxide, until hopefully, one day, there will be an easy way to shift away from fossil fuels. So, in the meantime, we can offset our own emissions with carbon offsets.
You can get involved by calculating your own carbon footprint and purchasing offsets. Because carbon offsets are relatively new, you’ll need to go through a verified and accredited third-party vendor.
We, at Power Wizard, are one of those. Enter your information in our calculator, and we can tell you how much carbon dioxide you produce annually. Once you know, you can pick one of the carbon offset products we have depending on which climate initiative speaks to you. Like reforestation, or wind, solar, or hydro power.
I’m just one person. How can I help?
Each person emits an average of 2.3 pounds of carbon dioxide per day. If every single person did their part to offset emission, that’s 7 billion multiplied by 2.3, which would be over 14 billion pounds of carbon dioxide per DAY that was reduced from the atmosphere. And if larger corporations jumped in on carbon offsets, we could reach carbon neutral sooner. Every single person is responsible for emitting carbon dioxide, so we’re responsible for offsetting it too.
It takes one person to start a movement, and that one person can be you.
